As part of its mission, the PAB communicates the results of research supported by the institute to a wide variety of audiences including congressional staff, NIH "Not invented here." See digispeak.

administrators, public interest groups, NIEHS staff, and the general public.

As a method of accomplishing this task, the PAB started a new feature in January 2000 to highlight research being supported by the NIEHS at academic research institutions across the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . Each month, the PAB searches the most recent scientific literature for interesting papers published in high-impact journals by NIEHS grantees and contractors. Articles are chosen based on their potential impact on the scientific topic being investigated, high public interest, and potential for public health impact.

A lay summary of each "Paper of the Month" is prepared and placed on the DERT Web site. The lay summaries and copies of the publications are circulated to senior DERT and NIEHS staff. Papers of the Month are also used in preparation for the NIEHS congressional budget justification and in responses to NIH requests for research highlights.

Grantees are invited to submit publications for potential selection. Articles published in the previous month will be considered. Manuscripts may be submitted and will be considered for use after they have been published.

The lay summaries and citations for all Papers of the Month to date can be found at http://www.niehs.nih.gov/dert/profiles/hilites/hilites.htm.
