DERMIK/RoC S.A. JOINT VENTURE INTRODUCES SKIN-CARE LINE IN U.S. MARKET

 COLLEGEVILLE, Pa., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- One of Europe's leading skin-care companies, RoC S.A., and a U.S. dermatology company, Dermik Laboratories, Inc., today announced market entry of a new line of skin- care products. Educational and sales efforts will be focused toward dermatologists and pharmacists. Taking a unique marketing approach, these products will be available in select pharmacies. Dermik Laboratories, Inc., is a subsidiary of Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, Inc. (NYSE: RPR). RoC S.A. is a member of the Moet-Hennessy-Louis-Vuitton group.
 "More and more dermatologists are called on by patients to consult on daily skin-care regimens, not only to treat acute disease," said Nia Terezakis, M.D., clinical professor of dermatology, Tulane Medical School, New Orleans. "Skin-care approaches such as RoC's allow dermatologists to participate more fully in meeting their patients' total health needs."
 In Europe, doctors have already taken the total patient care approach. Now, U.S. consumers are seeking out skin-care information from the source they trust most, their health-care provider. Market research studies show that 82 percent of patients already consult their physicians about over-the-counter products.
 "With the emphasis on health in the 1990s -- physical fitness, nutrition, reading food labels -- American consumers are becoming just as concerned about what they apply to their skin as what they eat," said Henrietta Cole, owner of Jeffersonville, Pennsylvania Medicine Shoppe, who has been providing RoC products to her retail pharmacy customers for two months as part of a test-market study. "As health-care policy continues to evolve, the pharmacist's role as a counselor will become vital to guide these consumers about appropriate OTC and prescription choices."
 Products in the RoC line are without perfume, contain no unnecessary ingredients and have been clinically proven to be hypo-allergenic and non-comedogenic. Moreover, RoC does not perform any animal testing. All RoC products, ingredients and manufacturing processes undergo continuous reevaluation and revision to ensure that safe and effective materials are used.
 The RoC Product Line
 For the past 36 years, RoC has marketed a leading line of hypo- allergenic skin-care products throughout the world. Founded in 1957 by French pharmacist Jean-Charles Lissarrague, the RoC line includes products that are market leaders in 50 countries.

 The six new skin-care products are:
 -- Hydra+ Integral Optimum Moisturizing Facial Cream. Maintains optimum moisturization for all skin types; reduces transepidermal water loss and reinforces the hydro-lipidic film. Suggested retail price: $14.00/1.4 oz.
 -- RoC Enriched Treatment Cream. Improves hydration in very dry skin conditions; increases comfort and softens the skin. Suggested retail price: $13.00/1.7 oz.
 -- RoC Gel Cleansing Wash. Gentle, effective cleansing for oily, problem skin; thoroughly cleanses without irritating or causing rebound sebum secretion. Suggested retail price: $9.50/4.2 fl. oz.
 -- RoC Shine Control Cream. Moisturization and maintenance for oily skin; absorbs excess sebum secretion, providing matte appearance. Suggested retail price: $9.50/1.0 oz.
 -- RoC Intensive Hand Care Cream. Water-resistant care for dry, rough or damaged hands; restores hydration and enhances softness; contains protective, moisturizing, film-forming ingredients. Suggested retail price: $10.00/2.6 oz.
 -- Hydra+ Corps Optimum Moisturizing Body Lotion. Balanced, prolonged hydration for the body; reduces transepidermal water loss and reinforces the cohesion of corneocytes; restores skin's hydro-lipidic film. Suggested retail price: $12.50/6.8 fl. oz.
 "I've been recommending RoC products right along with prescription products to my patients," said Rose Saperstein, M.D., dermatologist, who participated in the test marketing in Beverly Hills, Calif. "The response has been very positive, particularly among patients who have sensitive skin."
 The RoC Concept
 Robert Rietschel, M.D., head of dermatology, Ochsner Clinic, chairman of the American Academy of Dermatology Cosmetic Toiletries and Fragrance Association Liaison Committee, said, "The medical community is still seeking agreement on the definition of hypo-allergenicity. While we work to determine scientific standards, I feel confident that recommending RoC products to my patients will minimize their risk of allergic skin reaction based on the ingredients and laboratory and clinical testing."
 According to one study, 48 percent of reported cases of contact dermatitis are cosmetic-related (Note A). Fragrance is the leading cause of contact and cosmetic dermatitis, and preservatives are reported as the second leading allergen (Note B). All RoC products are developed based on a skin-care concept emphasizing quality control for patient care.
 -- Hypo-allergenic. The risk of skin reaction is minimized in every RoC product.
 -- Without perfume. Perfume does nothing to improve the skin's appearance, and may cause allergic reaction. All RoC products are fragrance-free with no masking agents.
 -- Non-comedogenic. RoC finished products and raw materials are all selected and tested to ensure they don't encourage blackhead formation.
 -- Hospital- and laboratory-tested. New raw materials and finished RoC products are clinically tested on 100 to 200 patients, and no animal testing is done.
 -- Pure formulas. No unnecessary additives are ever used in RoC products, and fewer ingredients are used than in many comparable products.
 -- Strict ingredient selection. Each RoC ingredient is selected for optimum effectiveness, proven safety and cosmetic acceptability.
 -- Manufacturing and quality control. Production of RoC products is in accordance with pharmaceutical industry standards.
 -- Specially designed packaging. RoC packaging preserves products in optimum conditions, and minimizes contamination to allow for fewer preservatives.
 -- Supplementary information. All RoC products include a list of ingredients and are expiration-dated.
