``You see a difference in him between his 3-year-old year and the start of his 4-year-old year,'' John Shirreffs John A. Shirreffs (born June 1, 1945 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse trainer.

Giacomo finished third in the Preakness and seventh in the Belmont Stakes - 3-year-old champion Afleet Alex won both races - before having bone-chip surgery. When he and jockey Mike Smith break from post 4 in a field of 13 in the 1 1/8-mile Strub, the gray son of Holy Bull will be making his first start in nearly eight months.

Shirreffs said Giacomo is about 150 pounds heavier than when he last competed and has been more aggressive in workouts, but the trainer thinks he'll have the same come-from-behind style as when he rallied from 18th to win the Derby at 50-1 odds, becoming the longest-priced winner of the race since 91-1 Doneraile in 1913.

In light of Giacomo's extended layoff - and lingering doubt about the quality of a horse who has lost eight of 10 career starts - Santa Anita morning-line maker Jeff Tufts listed him as a 6-1 co-third choice behind San Pasqual Handicap The San Pasqual Handicap is a race for thoroughbred horses run at Santa Anita Park each year.
