DEPUTY SHOT; PROGNOSIS BLEAK.

During lunch Thursday, Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Shayne York sought advice from his sergeant.

With his pending marriage to Jennifer Parrish - a deputy he met while both were assigned to the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center - York wanted to know how to secure his future.

``I told him to plan for the future - his retirement and things like that,'' said Sgt. Steve Wilson, a 14-year veteran.

But York never got the chance to follow up on the advice. After work Thursday, while he and Parrish were visiting a friend at the De Cut hair salon in Buena Park, York was gravely wounded - shot in the back of the head by two robbers.

York, 26, was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was given no chance of survival. York's family was at his bedside, including his mother, who arrived Friday afternoon from Colorado.

``The doctors don't believe there's any chance of survival . . . (They believe) he'll pass away and the family's prepared for that,'' said Sheriff Sherman Block, who visited the young deputy.

``They said they'd rather have him just pass away on his own than to go into all these heroic efforts,'' Block said.

Grief counselors were dispatched Friday to Pitchess, where York had worked two years after graduating from the sheriff's academy and where he and Parrish met. The couple was planning a trip to Mammoth this weekend and had set a wedding date for next June.

``Everyone is broken up here,'' said Wilson, who works at the maximum-security jail. ``There have been a lot of tears. It's been difficult.''

Authorities said the shooting occurred about 9 p.m. Thursday, when York and Parrish - unarmed and dressed in street clothing - were visiting the owner of the salon, located near Knott's Berry Farm. Parrish was planning to get a weave, and York was waiting for a haircut.

Two gunmen barged in and ordered everyone to hand over money and valuables, authorities said. The deputies and owner John Ayers complied, with Parrish even surrendering her engagement ring.

``We tell our people to try and be as cooperative as possible if they don't have the opportunity to get the edge in a situation,'' Block said.

``My understanding was not only was he cooperative but the deputy was actually very polite to the robbers, knowing that he didn't want to agitate them with the women in the shop and so forth,'' Block said.

While examining York's wallet, the gunmen determined that he was a sheriff's deputy, and one of them shot him as he lay prone on the floor, authorities said.

``They said, `This is for the way you treat brothers and Crips (gang members) in prison,' '' Ayers said.

Parrish's sister, Amy, also was present, and she watched as the gunmen put a 9 mm pistol to the back of Jennifer Parrish's head, Ayers said. The gunman shouted expletives and told her, ``You're lucky you are a woman or I'd kill you, too.''

The gunmen took York's wallet, Parrish's ring and $11 in cash, but threw York's sheriff's badge in the trash as they fled in a white Ford Mustang, authorities said. They held up a Lamp Post pizza parlor in Yorba Linda a short time later, officials said.

About 11:30 p.m., Fullerton police pulled over the Mustang and two men were arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of robbery and attempted murder.

The suspects, who authorities said are from the Compton area, were not identified.
