DEPUTY SAYS MAN HE SHOT WAS DRIVING TRUCK AT HIM.

, according to Capt. Ron Nelson, a sheriff's spokesman. Nelson quoted the plainclothes deputy as saying Canley acknowledged that the detective was a law-enforcement officer, but got into his full-size pickup truck and tried to run over him. The detective fired at the advancing truck, Nelson said.

Canley was struck once with a bullet and taken to Los Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:
  • Alfonso García Robles (1911-1991), Mexican diplomat and politician
  • Aurora Robles (born 1980), Mexican fashion model
  • Charlie Robles (born 1943), Puerto Rican musician
 Hospital & Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Nelson said a loaded handgun was found in Canley's waistband. The Sheriff's Department and the Ventura County District Attorney's Office will investigate to determine if the shooting was justified.
