The most recent arrest of a sheriff's deputy on a workers' compensation fraud claim occurred in 1987 when a deputy off work because of an injury was caught dancing at a Chippendales all-male road show in Atlantic City Atlantic City, city (1990 pop. 37,986), Atlantic co., SE N.J., an Atlantic resort and convention center; settled c.1790, inc. 1854. Justin originally filed a workers' compensation claim June 4, 2001, after suffering a knee injury June 2 during an off-duty flag football practice in anticipation of law enforcement Police Olympics games, Deputy District Attorney Ephraim Ray Turner said.

Then, more than a week later, Justin filed a second claim alleging he injured his right knee June 2 when he parked an all-terrain vehicle and was struck by another ATV (1) (Advanced TV) An early name for the digital TV standard proposed by the Advisory Committee on Advanced Television Service (ACATS).  driven by another deputy, Turner said.

``It's our position that the injury he filed the job-related workers' compensation claim on was actually sustained when he was practicing flag football,'' Turner said. ``That injury was not covered under the sheriff's workers' compensation policy.''

Since 1996-97, the Sheriff's Department workers' compensation costs have risen 119 percent from $39 million to a record $86 million in 2001-02. On average, about 700 of the department's more than 16,000 employees are off the job on workers' compensation claims on any given day.

Tom Higgins, head deputy of the District Attorney's Workers' Compensation Fraud Division, said his office has been cracking down on Los Angeles city, county, Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. ``I think it shows a commitment by the Sheriff's Department and our office that we are serious, and even law enforcement officers, if they commit fraud, they are going down,'' Higgins said.

The Sheriff's Department's workers' compensation costs have come under scrutiny in the past two years, and county officials have released reports showing that deputies have reaped benefits even when they were injured in off-duty sports such as skydiving skydiving

Sheriff's Risk Management Bureau Lt. Scott Johnson said the department brought the case to the District Attorney's Office and the Department of Insurance after suspecting that fraud might have been involved in the second claim.

``It's an unfortunate circumstance,'' Johnson said. ``We don't want to see any of our deputies being arrested for anything. If the facts bear out that he was defrauding the state, then shame on him.''
