Through an interpreter, Garcia begged March's family in court for forgiveness.

"I know someday you will forgive me," he said. "If you see my face and I see your face again, I only want to ask for forgiveness for what I've done, and I know that you will forgive me at an appropriate time.

"I know you don't want to listen to me and you don't want to see my face. I know that these words will not take the hatred that you feel for me."

As he spoke, tears ran down the face of March's widow, Teri, who had driven from Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. "I'm relieved beyond words," she said after it was over. "I just never really believe it till it happens -- and it happened."

Garcia's demeanor surprised her.

"I was somewhat surprisingly pleased by it," she said. "It showed there was some heart there. I expected him to be callous cal·lous

Forgiveness is something Teri March said she would work on.

"I'm going to pray about that," she said. "I'm going to work toward forgiveness. A year ago I hated him so much and that was my drive, to see him punished. He's being punished now. I don't hate him anymore.

"It's all so tragic. He threw his life away. He's only 30."
