Byline: Jason Kandel Staff Writer

HAWTHORNE Hawthorne.

1 City (1990 pop. 71,349), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1922. Located in an oil- and gas-producing area, Hawthorne manufactures navigation systems, solar panels, electronic components, silicon instruments, and transportation equipment.

2 Borough (1990 pop. 17,084), Passaic co., NE N.J.; settled 1850, inc. 1898. Primarily a residential suburb of New York City, it has light manufacturing.
 - Sheriff's deputies gathered in Hawthorne on Monday night waiting for the surrender of fugitive FUGITIVE - Facing Unpleasant Girl's Insulting Taunts Isn't Very Enjoyable (Kids Next Door show) Kevin Pullum, who escaped from Twin Towers.

Deputies said Pullum's relatives and NBC Channel 4 television weatherman Christopher Nance had worked with Pullum to surrender.

Early Monday morning a 911 call from a frightened Hawthorne woman claiming that fugitive Pullum had come to her door early Monday to ask for money prompted a search by Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, who came up empty-handed, authorities said.

Hawthorne police received a call at 4:46 a.m. from the 13100 block of Cordary Avenue, and set up a containment zone in the neighborhood, where sheriff's deputies took up the search for the prisoner, who escaped from the Men's Central Jail on July 6 just hours after being convicted of attempted murder.

``They canvassed the area with bloodhounds bloodhound, breed of large hound whose ancestors were known in the Mediterranean region before the Christian era. It stands about 25 in. (63.5 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs between 80 and 110 lb (36.3–49.9 kg). Its short, smooth coat may be black and tan, red and tan, or tawny. The skin is very loose and hangs in deep folds over the forehead and at the sides of the face, giving the dog its characteristically mournful expression. and a helicopter unit,'' said Deputy Richard Westin, a sheriff's spokesman. ``They were searching and didn't come up with him. They tried to trail him with the dog's trail, but the trail ran out.''

By about 1:30 p.m., authorities withdrew from the containment zone but continued a search for witnesses.

``Three strikes, you're out'' felon Pullum, 31, apparently walked out of the jail without anyone noticing, shortly after being convicted of attempted murder in Van Nuys.

Information about the Van Nuys escape was withheld for a few days, and Sheriff's Department officials began an investigation into how the prisoner - an African-American standing 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 240 pounds - pulled it off without detection.

Wearing civilian clothes and carrying what appeared to be a legitimate jail employee badge, Pullum walked out of the jail just before 8 p.m. July 6, said Sheriff's Lt. Carl Deeley.
