DEPUTIES TO TRACK AREA SEX OFFENDERS.

Byline: Lisa Van Proyen Daily News Staff Writer

State records show that about 100 registered sex offenders live in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. , but sheriff's investigators believe there are more and are trying to track them down.

Within the next three months, about two dozen reserve deputies assigned to the Santa Clarita Valley will be knocking on doors throughout the area to confirm the whereabouts of convicted sex offenders, who have been ordered by law to register with law enforcement, said Detective Danny Lingo.

Bruce Sonnenblick of the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's station.

Lingo, who is based in West Covina West Covina, city (1990 pop. 96,086), Los Angeles co., S Calif., in the San Gabriel valley; settled 1905, inc. 1923. Before World War II, West Covina was a small rural community where walnuts, wheat, and livestock were raised. , has in recent years handled on his own the records of an estimated 18,000 registered sex offenders countywide. In California, there are 77,000 registered sex offenders, he said.

``They're so transient. It's an ongoing process to keep it current,'' Lingo said.

The issue has received widespread attention recently with publicity surrounding the 2-year-old New Jersey statute known as Megan's law Megan's Laws are named for Megan Kanka, a seven-year-old girl from New Jersey who was sexually assaulted and murdered in 1994 by a neighbor who, unknown to the victim's family, had been previously convicted for Sex Offenses against children.  and the measure passed this month by Congress requiring all states to warn communities when convicted child molesters and sexually violent offenders settle in their neighborhoods.

Currently, three sheriff's stations - in Pico, Carson and Lancaster - are participating in a pilot project in which deputies go door-to-door to confirm where sex offenders are living and whether they are registered, Lingo said.

Lingo said the concentration will begin on the high-risk offenders with at least one felony conviction for a sex offense and other violent felony convictions.

Warrants will be issued for the arrests of sex offenders who do not live where they are most recently registered, Lingo said.

``Our goal is to get everyone registered,'' he said. ``We're not here to arrest everyone.''
