DEPUTIES NAB MAN SUSPECTED IN MARKET THEFT.

Byline: Stacy Brown Daily News Staff Writer

Two men held about 20 employees and customers of a Canyon Country supermarket at gunpoint Wednesday night, attempting an escape with the contents of three cash registers, sheriff's officials said Thursday.

But an anonymous caller foiled foil 1

``It was a citizen who called 911 that really helped,'' Peters said. ``That call was big.''

Peters said Felix and an unidentified companion entered the store sometime after 9 p.m. holding a gun and ordering the employees and customers to lie on the floor while they emptied three cash registers.

``Both suspects then left the store on foot and while outside the store Felix robbed another guy of his checkbook,'' Peters said.

Deputies responded immediately to the call for help and apprehended Felix, who Peters said was holding the stolen cash - an undisclosed amount.

``We think we've recovered all the money, but we won't know that for certain until after the store does an audit,'' Peters said.

Store officials declined Friday to comment on the robbery.

Authorities said they are searching for a second suspect.

Despite the failure to apprehend both suspects, Peters praised witnesses and the anonymous caller.

``One witness said it was only moments after the suspects left the store that our deputies arrived and that's because the citizens of this community stepped in and made our jobs easier,'' Peters said. ``We appreciate any time we get such a quick notification.''
