Sheriff's deputies continued to search Saturday for the mother of a newborn newborn /new·born/ (noo´born?)

The baby was in stable condition at a local hospital Saturday.

Deputies from the Lancaster station and the local child abuse unit interviewed residents and neighbors asking them if they had seen anyone suspicious or if anyone knows who the mother might be.

``It's an open investigation.'' said sheriff's Sgt. Gil Arce. ``We don't have anyone in custody.''

The 8-pound baby boy - 4 to 6 hours old - was found shortly after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the 3300 block of West Avenue J-4 wrapped in a green and yellow towel and placed in a plastic trash bag that was stuffed with more towels.

The baby is expected to be turned over to the Department of Children's Services.
