DEPUTIES HURT IN SCUFFLE\Prisoner went for officer's gun during transport.

Two deputies and a woman prisoner were slightly injured during a struggle that erupted in a jail van on the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley.  after the woman tried to take the driver's pistol, officials said Tuesday.

When forgery suspect Jewell Scott, 43, unstrapped her seat belt and tried to grab the driver's gun from its holster shortly after 8 p.m. Monday, a deputy seated beside her tried to restrain her. Her wrists were secured to a chain around her waist, and a deputy was seated next to her in a rear seat of the van following Sheriff's Department policy, Lanier said.

After the struggle, the driver, Deputy Edward Welbourn, was treated for minor injuries to his hand and elevated blood pressure. The other deputy, Linda Birch, was treated for neck and back pain, Lanier said. Scott complained that her wrist hurt, but she refused treatment, he said.

Both deputies were released from the hospital after treatment, and Scott was sent back to Sybil Brand, Lanier said.
