Sheriff's investigators went to Laughlin to interview Higgins, who had worked for Cummings and knew him for many years. They arrested Higgins on Thursday night, sheriff's officials said.

Higgins used to tend bar at Up th' Hill, a La Crescenta pub Cummings owned for 22 years, said bartender Rich Myers. Higgins and Myers frequented the bar and were acquaintances.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies were in Laughlin on Friday, said Sgt. Clark County (Nevada) Detention Center authorities said Higgins was being held because of a parole violation that stemmed from a forgery case and the outstanding warrant from San Luis Obispo County.

In San Luis Obispo, Higgins was alleged to have stolen from a longtime friend and his wife earlier this year. The couple, John and Marla Bassford, told police Higgins duped them out of $1,000 cash and credit card charges and stole a family heirloom - a $8,000 mandolin mandolin (măn'dəlĭn`, măn`dəlĭn'), musical instrument of the lute family, with a half-pear-shaped body, a fretted neck, and a variable number of strings, plucked with the fingers or with a plectrum. , Las Vegas police said.

John Bassford and Myers described Higgins as a man who was down on his luck. Myers called him a ``drifter and a loner loner Psychiatry A single young man estranged from society and family, who suffers from psychogenic pain, and tends to live 'on the edge', vacillating between aggression and depression; loners often have unrealistic goals, but are unable to work towards those goals .''

Extradition of Higgins will be sought, but it is unclear when he will be brought back to California, Solis said.

Scott Carrier, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, said Friday that Cummings' body had not yet been examined. It is due to be autopsied over the weekend, he said.
