DEPUTIES ARREST FIVE IN BAD-CHECK SCAM.

More than $30,000 worth of televisions, computers, cameras, furniture and other merchandise was recovered in the breakup of what detectives described as a scheme to defraud To make a Misrepresentation of an existing material fact, knowing it to be false or making it recklessly without regard to whether it is true or false, intending for someone to rely on the misrepresentation and under circumstances in which such person does rely on it to his or  businesses using bad checks.

Deputies said the suspects wrote checks to make purchases at local businesses and then attempted to close the accounts before the checks cleared.

``We've requested information from other agencies to find out if they have any of these similar crimes and we also notified other branches of the major stores,'' Detective Mark Machanic said Sunday.

They were booked on suspicion of burglary, grand theft and conspiracy to commit grand theft, officials said. The van contained $10,000 to $12,000 worth of merchandise, Machanic said. The rest of the property was found in the Sandbrook Drive house.

The suspects were being held at the Lancaster sheriff's station in lieu of $100,000 bail each.
