DEPUTIES, TEEN-AGERS SQUARE OFF : BASKETBALL GAME AIMS AT PROMOTING GOODWILL.

Byline: Mary Schubert Daily News Staff Writer

The men in green met their match this week against boys half their age in a friendly game of hoops between Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County sheriff's deputies and local teen-agers from the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. The basketball game Wednesday night was a chance for the youths to interact with the off-duty Santa Clarita Valley station deputies, with not a badge, gun or uniform in sight.

The idea, Sonnenblick explained, was to promote some goodwill between the department and the local kids, and ``to show the youths that deputies can be human,'' he said. ``We hope . . . when they need a deputy, they will look upon us as friends as opposed to the enemy.''

A self-effacing Sonnenblick described his team as ``a group of middle-aged, balding, out-of-shape, doughnut-ingesting deputies.

The blue-jersey-clad boys, he acknowledged, were probably not the ones who get in trouble with the law. ``Even the good kids need some reinforcement,'' Sonnenblick said. ``It's always nice for them to see that we appreciate them.''

Last month, another Boys & Girls Club team beat the deputy squad by about 20 points, but Sonnenblick was glad to see the deputies' margin of defeat had narrowed considerably since that contest.

``I'm tired. These guys are too young for me,'' parking control officer Ron Haywood, his team's top scorer, said late in the game as he bent over and tried to catch his breath.

``I figure one of these days, one of (the deputies) is going to pull me over and give me a ticket. They can laugh at me in court, but not on the court,'' joked Ramone Floyd, 18, a College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. The teens had more than youth and agility on their side, said George Garcia, 17. The generation gap was evident in the two teams' style of play, which was more flashy among he and his teammates, the COC See chip on chip.  freshman said.

Floyd was a bit more diplomatic.

``They have full-time jobs, so they're not really practicing as much as we are,'' said Floyd, who sports a tattoo of a basketball on his left arm. ``Fifty weeks out of the year, we're playing basketball, and the other two weeks we're watching it.''
