Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  - They graduated four of their best players, including arguably one of the best in the program's history, from a team that came within a victory of winning its first Southern Section title since 1981.

Nevertheless, the Desert High of Edwards Air Force Base football team isn't setting its sights any lower this year. Actually, the Scorpions are aiming higher, and according to according to

``There's really no pressure on us because we feel that we can go all the way, and as long as we have our mind set on that, I think we can go forth and make it to Week 14 like we did last year,'' junior defensive end/running back Chris Morris said.

The Scorpions, who are favored to repeat as High Desert League champions, are relying heavily on junior slot receiver James Cook. Davis, Morris and standout junior linebacker Derek Shingledecker also are expected to figure prominently in a possible title run.

The Desert football community still is grieving the loss of player Paul Ramirez, who died during a recent practice. Under a directive from the Muroc Joint Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts. , players and coaches are under strict instructions not to speak publicly on any aspect of the incident.

Coach Joel Sweitzer recently was reinstated as head coach after serving a suspension while the district investigated the incident.

According to Sweitzer, among the team's greatest strengths this season is depth, which the program has been lacking in recent years. Desert has 30 players on its varsity team and 70 in the program, a big improvement considering the Scorpions barely have had enough players to field teams in recent years.
