 MIAMI, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Ken Knopf, an entrepreneurial endodonist who moved to Miami in 1980, would often ask his patients about the sweets they ate. Having a passion for food, he began researching the industry on his own with an eye to marketing frozen yogurt products internationally. It was the beginning of a road that would lead him to the creation of Puffin Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt, a remarkable new frozen dessert company.
 In 1980, Dr. Knopf moved his practice to Miami, where he purchased a small gourmet shop in Coconut Grove. One day, when his chef called in sick, Knopf raced home at lunch time, donned an apron and cooked furiously for an hour-and-a-half to prepare for the dinner rush. His food drew rave reviews, and his aggressive approach to business lifted sales from $200 to $750 per square foot in just two years.
 This success convinced Knopf to leave dentistry, and develop a frozen dessert product of his own. He discovered a new genre of soft serve machinery, SupaNova, that could serve ice cream the way he remembered it as a youngster. As a child, Knopf had always enjoyed adding "goodies" to his ice cream -- nuts, candies, even cake -- then mashing them together with the back of a spoon. With the help of the SupaNova machinery, he could serve his new "Spoon-Softened(TM)" Frozen Yogurt and Ice Cream.
 Puffin has picked up nearly 20 distributors from New York and Florida to Chicago, with the help of a team of ice cream industry heavy hitters from top companies including Haagen-Dazs. The product is quickly making headway in nearly every region of the country, and is under test at top national fast-food chains, convenience stores and retail outlets.
