Gallegly (born March 7 1944), an American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1987, currently representing the 24th District of California (map). , R-Simi Valley, is counting on growers, who he said tend to be Republicans, to help expand his base of support.

Republicans,'' said Case, 52, a Ventura attorney. ``In this particular county, you're surprised'' when ranchers support a Democratic candidate, he said.

Case drew endorsements from seven local growers, including Bob Pinkerton, Richard Pidduck and Craig Underwood, who wrote in a joint letter that Case ``exemplifies mainstream values and mainstream representation.''

However, Gallegly said he maintains strong support from the agricultural industry and on Thursday received a letter from industry leaders, including grower Pierre Tada, Rob Roy Rob Roy [Scottish Gaelic,=red Rob], 1671–1734, Scottish freebooter, whose real name was Robert MacGregor. He is remembered chiefly as he figures in Sir Walter Scott's novel Rob Roy (1818).  and John Borchard, backing his re-election campaign.

``You don't get 60 percent of the vote in a district with more Democrats than Republicans for five election cycles without support from everyone,'' said Gallegly.

Gallegly said while he draws support from across the county, there will always be some voters who simply choose another candidate.

In November 2000, Case expects to make his first run for the 23rd congressional seat held by Gallegly, a seven-term incumbent.

Case pledged to work to open overseas trade for lemons, the county's top crop, and is proposing labor programs to allow work visas and guest-worker status for farm workers from Mexico.

``People are sneaking into the country now and sneaking out,'' he said. He said he believes the attitude toward farmworkers should be: ``We need you and we're going to give you a visa to do that. Next year, you can come back and do it again.''
