``The bigger the moment, the more it seems he wants to be in the game,'' Luc Robitaille said of Demitra, who scored also the Kings' third and final goal Thursday.

When the Kings signed Demitra, who had led St. Louis in scoring in four of the last six seasons, to a three-year, $13.5-million contract, it was with the hope that he would form a dynamic combination with his countryman, Ziggy Palffy. But Palffy spurned spurn

No problem. Demitra, who came under mild criticism during training camp for his perceived reluctance to shoot, had no such problems on Sunday after the Kings completed a crucial penalty kill early in overtime.

Conroy controlled the puck just inside the blue line and nudged the puck to his right into an open space for Demitra, who came flying across the line and into the slot and beat Fernandez with a wrist shot.

``I just got a puck and tried to beat a guy,'' Demitra said, with typical understatement. ``(Conroy) went to the net and I got an open lane. I had speed and he saw me and went for it. It was a great play by him.''

The Wild put forth a strong effort, especially considering they played the night before in Phoenix, and the Jacques Lemaire-coached team put forth a typically strong defensive effort.

Despite a poor start that drew the ire of coach Andy Murray, the Kings rebounded well and mostly played with discipline. They took only one penalty in each of the first two periods, but things nearly unraveled.

With just under five minutes remaining in the third period, a scrum developed in front of the Kings' net. Minnesota forward Wes Walz stabbed at the puck while it was under the arm of Kings goaltender Mathieu Garon and appeared to push it over the line, but a video review was inconclusive.

``I guess common sense doesn't mean anything there,'' Walz said. ``I didn't see the replay, but common sense will tell you that if the glove and the arm are behind the goal line, there's a pretty good chance the puck is underneath it.''
