DELTA DENTAL OF MINNESOTA TAKES STOCK OF DENTAL BENEFITS IN CLINTON HEALTH CARE PACKAGE

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The comprehensive health benefits package about to be proposed by the Clinton administration includes dental benefits, according to Michael Walsh, president and CEO of Delta Dental Plan of Minnesota.
Walsh said he is encouraged that the package, as outlined to members of Congress in a near-final draft, initially includes coverage of preventive dental services for children, and would phase in preventive coverage for adults over the next five years.
"Oral health is an important part of health care and we're glad the administration recognizes that," said Walsh, who has been active with the national Delta Dental Association in getting dental care included in the mandated package. "Frequently, changes in oral health signal a more serious illness, and neglecting dental care can lead to health problems. Dental care has long been a model for and partner with preventive medicine."
Walsh said he also hopes the Clinton administration will "deliver on its commitment to preserve the tax deductibility of benefits such as dental that have proven their preventive value, even if they are not included in the core package right away." Since coverage for adult dental services is to be phased in, its tax deductibility is important for those who purchase the benefit in the meantime.
Delta Dental of Minnesota is the state's largest dental coverage company, affiliated with 97 percent of the state's dentists and covering nearly one million Minnesotans through an array of managed care plans.
