DELL TARGETS USERS OF LOW-COST NETWORK WORKSTATIONS, FIRST-TIME PC
BUYERS; 333s/L OFFERS RICH VALUE FOR BUDGET CONSCIOUS CUSTOMERS
AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move to offer increased performance and value for entry-level buyers of its performance series PCs, Dell Computer Corporation today introduced the Dell System 333s/L, based on the new 33-megahertz (MHz) Intel386 SX microprocessor. With base system prices beginning at $810, the 333s/L represents an outstanding value for price-sensitive buyers, offering solid performance and compatibility and Dell's extensive performance series service and support package.
"With the 333s/L, we're throwing another 'fastball' at the competition for budget-conscious customers," said Joel Kocher, senior vice president of Dell USA. "We designed this system for certain segments of our customer base, especially cost-conscious buyers of network workstations and first-time PC customers, who aren't ready to spend a little more for a 486 system, but who need a strong performer and the guaranteed support of a company that has built its business on its commitment to customer satisfaction."
The ISA (Industry Standard Architecture)-based 333s/L, which succeeds the 325SX as the company's entry-level performance series offering, is a new Dell-designed system housed in an enhanced slimline chassis that sports a new look and added features such as a "power-on" LED and a front reset button. Based on Intel's 33MHz 386 SX processor, the system operates at the same internal rate as systems using a 33MHz 386 DX processor, with the power to speed through mainstream business applications such as word processing and spreadsheets, while costing significantly less than 386 DX-based systems. A socket is included for an optional Intel387 SX 33MHz Math CoProcessor, which is scheduled to be announced this week by Intel, for customers who desire extra power to run math-intensive applications such as complex spreadsheets.
The 333s/L is designed to provide greater reliability for customers by using buffered serial ports that guard against losing data during communications operations, such as transmitting a fax. The 333s/L's buffered serial ports are able to store data in a memory buffer until the processor is ready to handle the information. In non-buffered serial ports, data can be lost when the processor is extremely busy completing other tasks.
Additional features of the 333s/L include support for high-capacity 3.5-inch, 2.88MB diskette drives, support for SCSI disk drives and tape drives with the addition of a SCSI host bus adapter, an enhanced system setup program that allows users to easily modify the system configuration, and enhanced system security features.
For all these value-added features, the 333s/L is still entry-level priced, beginning at $810 for a basic system configuration including 2MB of RAM, a 50MB hard drive, and one 3.5- or 5.25-inch diskette drive. The 333s/L comes standard with Dell's new QuietKey keyboard, diagnostic diskettes, and Dell's easy-to-use, award-winning documentation package. Similar to other PCs in the company's performance series, the 333s/L is custom-built to user specifications in thousands of basic hardware configurations, and is available with a wide array of options such as monitors that range in price from $199 to $1,999. Other options include: a variety of network interface cards that are available factory-installed beginning at $89; a $150 package of pre-installed DOS 5.0, Windows 3.1 and a mouse; and a $139, space-saving "combo" diskette drive that fits both 3.5- and 5.25-inch drives into a standard half- height drive bay. For a listing of system specifications and prices of popular configurations, please see attached information sheet.
The Dell System 333s/L, available immediately, comes with Dell's widely acclaimed, comprehensive service and support program for its performance series systems, which includes unlimited lifetime toll-free technical support with guaranteed response and guaranteed next-business day, on-site service through Dell's alliance with BancTec Service Corporation.
