DELL INTRODUCES NEW LINE OF DIMENSION PCs; SEVEN 486 SYSTEMS FEATURE LOCAL BUS VIDEO, MORE EXTENSIVE SUPPORT AND CONFIGURABILITY

AUSTIN, Texas, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Pursuing its strategy to provide price- sensitive PC buyers with extremely attractive computing solutions, Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: DELL) today introduced seven new 486-based Dimension systems that feature "local bus" graphics capabilities and enhanced processor performance through an integrated Dell system design. The new systems come with a more extensive support program, and are available in a much wider range of hardware configurations than previously offered for the company's Dimension line of products, and in addition, customers purchasing Dimension systems can now custom- order factory installation of more than 75 software applications through the ReadyWare program. Priced beginning at less than $1,400 for a fully loaded system including Super VGA color monitor, the new PCs are designed to meet the requirements of customers who need solid performance, support and service, together with the lowest possible price.
The new systems feature an advanced Dell design that yields up to 67 percent faster processor performance; enhanced graphics performance is built-in through an integrated local bus video subsystem that boosts video performance up to 122 percent compared with previous Dimension systems. Available in small-footprint and mid-size desktop and floor- standing chassis, the systems are based on the ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) bus, and support the full range of Intel486 microprocessors, from 25-megahertz (MHz) i486 SX through 66MHz i486 DX2.
"We've increased the value of our Dimension systems significantly by adding new product features, and by expanding the range of factory- installed customer options," said Rob Howe, acting senior vice president of Dell USA. "Extending ReadyWare software service to Dimension customers means that for $15 per system, you can have all of the applications you purchase loaded up and ready to run when the PC comes out of the box -- the result is a meaningful savings in time and cost. And we still back Dimension systems with Dell's direct service and support program which independent surveys consistently confirm is the best in the industry."
With all their new features and configuration options, the new systems are still value priced beginning at $1,399 for a system that includes a 25MHz i486 SX processor, 4-megabytes (MB) of RAM, a 170- million byte hard disk drive, a 3.5" and 5.25" diskette drive, a 1024 x 768 Super VGA color monitor, 512-kilobytes of video memory, and factory- installed MS-DOS 6.0, Windows 3.1 and a mouse. Additionally, the new systems are available in an expanded range of hardware configurations offering customers increased flexibility in choice of RAM, diskette drives, monitors, and other factory-installed peripherals such as tape backups, CD-ROM drives or modems.
The new Dimension systems are designed to meet the needs of mainstream, value-conscious users who, when working at the office or at home, need the capabilities of an i486 processor and fast graphics to run today's power-hungry operating systems and applications. Dell has designed a tailored service and support package for Dimension customers, who normally require a basic level of support, rather than more extensive and sophisticated service and support elements that are more expensive and do not fulfill their needs.
Dimension systems come with a comprehensive package of service and support that includes unlimited lifetime access to technical support professionals. Technical support hours, which currently cover 93 hours per week, will be extended to 24 hours per day, seven days per week on June 1. Also effective on June 1, will be a ten-minute technical support response guarantee for Dimension PCs purchased after May 1, 1993. Under this guarantee, customers calling technical support will speak to a technical expert within ten minutes of placing their call, or receive a $25 check or credit. Dell also guarantees a one-hour call back if customers do not wish to hold for even a few minutes, with an identical payment should the company not fulfill its pledge. Dell is the only company in the industry to offer written guarantees for technical support responsiveness, and in its most recently reported quarter, the company made only 16 payouts while handling more than 227,000 technical support calls.
One year of second-business day on-site service is also included in the purchase price of Dimension systems, and is provided through Dell's alliance with BancTec Service Corporation. Extended warranties -- for parts and labor, or for parts-only-- are available through Dell, and provide up to a total of five years of warranty coverage. Dell's extended warranties are user-configured, so prices vary with the level of coverage and the type of PC ordered by the customer.
