According to Richard LaTrace, president of Delchamps, the company selected Checkpoint security solutions because of their performance in a seven-store test and their future potential. "RF EAS systems are the ideal solution for our supermarkets because RF integrated scan/deactivation does not impact throughput speeds at checkout. We are also interested in RF EAS source tagging in which Checkpoint has demonstrated clear leadership in the drug store industry," said Mr. LaTrace.

 electronics will be built into different types of bar code scanners that Delchamps uses, including Spectra-Physics, NCR and ICL. Integrated scan/deactivation allows for the scanning of more than 100 products at heights up to 15 inches above the scanner.

The CCTV systems consist of a Clarity dome and seven to ten fixed cameras as well as two public view monitors. The cameras will be positioned throughout the stores and in receiving to monitor direct store deliveries. The CCTV systems will deter and detect internal theft and shoplifting in the cash office, at the front end, and in the meat, liquor, and health and beauty care aisles. The cameras also deter robbery and fraudulent "slip and fall" claims.

Delchamps, Inc., headquartered in Mobile, Alabama, operates 118 supermarkets and 10 liquor stores in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the Florida Panhandle. The supermarkets range in size from 30,000 to 65,000 square feet.
