DELANEY DROPS OUT OF MAYORAL CONTEST.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Mayoral candidate Tom Delaney Cyril Terence "Tom" Delaney (8 January 1911 - 31 August 2006) was a British sportsman and industrialist, perhaps best known in his later years for being the oldest licensed racing driver in the world, having competed in the same Lea-Francis car for more than three-quarters of a  is withdrawing from Lancaster's April 13 election, citing a need to support his son, who is facing criminal charges.

Delaney sent a statement to City Hall announcing that he will not actively campaign for mayor. Because his withdrawal came after ballots went to print, Delaney's name will appear on the ballot.

In his statement, Delaney said he was withdrawing from the race to support his son, Sean Delaney Sean "Goggie" Delaney (1949-12 April 2004) was a famous sportsman from County Laois, Ireland.

Aged 55, Sean died suddenly in 2004 and the news stunned the county.

With Delaney's withdrawal, the field for mayor is comprised of incumbent Frank Roberts and challengers Gene Gaynor and David Abber.

Tillman, 51, said she wants to bring in more sheriff's deputies and assist the school district in attracting funding.

Tillman, a project manager for a Kaiser Permanente hospital in Downey, moved to Lancaster seven months ago from Long Beach.

Tillman said she supports Measure 04-A, which calls for a tax of $25 per parcel to finance the addition of 10 deputies.

``You spend $25 in one night at the movies,'' Tillman said. ``That is not going to break the bank.''

Also running for two City Council seats are incumbents Andy Visokey and Jim Jeffra, and challengers Tim Rosen, an estate planner; Charles Hansen, a business consultant; and fire captain A.J. ``Ted'' Kalnas.

The ballot will also include William Parris' name, but Parris announced last month that he was withdrawing from the race in order to head up a committee looking into creating after-school programs.
