Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

For his first 18 years in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , Eddie Delahoussaye Edward J. Delahoussaye (born September 21 1951) was an American thoroughbred jockey from New Iberia, Louisiana.

He began his career in 1968 and in ten short years became the top American jockey with 384 wins.

San Juan Capistrano has some manufactures, including aircraft parts, medical apparatus, and boats, but the economy is  Invitational Handicap, whose 1-3/4 miles of twists and turns make it a classic jockeys' race. He just wasn't lucky enough.

That sure has changed. Last year, Delahoussaye won the race for the first time in 15 tries, riding Marlin as a late replacement for Chris McCarron Christopher John "Chris" McCarron (b. March 27 1955, Boston, Massachusetts) is an American thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame retired jockey.

He was introduced to the sport of thoroughbred racing by his older brother, jockey Gregg McCarron.

, he made it two straight, steering Amerique to a 1-1/2-length victory over favored Star Performance, again filling in for McCarron, who was out of town.

``I think Eddie's a pretty good replacement,'' winning trainer Ron McAnally Ronald L. Called "one of the most honored and respected of North American trainers" by Thoroughbred Times Co.  said with a smile. ``He's an old-timer (at 46), but he still has it.''

McCarron was in Texas, having a bad day, finishing off the board with Futuristic in the Lone Star Derby (won by Smolderin Heart) and Reality Road in the Texas Mile (won by Littlebitlively).

He'd been the regular rider for 4-year-old Amerique, a son of St. Jovite bred by owner Verne Winchell, the doughnuts man. Amerique had won just 2 of 13 previous starts and paid $24.80 on Sunday.

``Maybe the added distance helped,'' Delahoussaye said after the $400,000 Capistrano, North America's longest turf race.

Desormeaux has sewn up his third Santa Anita title in five years. Dance Parade was his 84th winner of the 86-day meet. Gary Stevens is second with 71.

Leading trainer Bob Baffert was winless Sunday and needs one to equal Gary Jones' 1975-76 record of 47 at Santa Anita. Baffert has four chances today.
