DEL MAR: CLASSIC FIELD GETS CROWDED.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Staff Writer

A day after Mazel Trick was injured in a workout, knocking the heavy favorite out of Sunday's Pacific Classic, the field for Del Mar's $1 million race grew to as many as 11 horses.

The trainer of Such Charisma, who has never raced on dirt, said the colt will be entered this morning, when post positions are scheduled to be drawn. And the trainers of turf specialists Ladies Din and Army of One as well as New York-based Catienus indicated their horses might be entered in the 1-1/4-mile race, weakened by this month's injuries to Victory Gallop Victory Gallop (foaled May 30, 1995 in Ontario, Canada) was an American-based Thoroughbred racehorse. Previously confirmed were Malek, General Challenge, Barter Town, River Keen, Lazy Lode, Smile Again and Jack Grandi. It was announced Wednesday that Smile Again has been purchased by Sidney Craig from Saudi Prince Ahmed Salman's Thoroughbred Corp. and moved to Ron McAnally's barn from Alex Hassinger's.

``I think it's a wide-open race, don't you?'' said Humberto Ascanio, assistant to Bobby Frankel, the Mazel Trick trainer whose hope for a fifth Pacific Classic victory now depends on Barter Town.

Mazel Trick fractured both sesamoid bones (Anat.) small bones or cartilages formed in tendons, like the patella and pisiform in man.

Whether the Hollywood Park 7-furlong record setter will survive and go to stud at former Kentucky Gov. ``He's not out of the woods,'' Ascanio said of Mazel Trick. ``We'll know after they do the surgery.''

Juddmonte Farms' Barter Town, who hasn't won at the stakes level, comes out of neck losses to Worldly Ways in Golden Gate Fields' All-American Handicap and to River Keen in Hollywood Park's Bel Air Handicap. Desormeaux will take over from Victor Espinoza.
