opens for the Del Mar Futurity The Del Mar Futurity is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. Beginning in the racing season of 2007, this race has been upgraded by the American Graded Stakes Committee from a Grade II event to a Grade I.  this afternoon, Bob Baffert will set a record for the long-standing feature of closing day at the San Diego County racetrack.

Of the eight colts in the race, five are trained by Baffert, an unprecedented number from one barn in a Del Mar stakes event. The question probably isn't whether the $250,000 sprint for 2-year-olds will be won by a Baffert horse for the seventh summer in a row, but whether it'll be Kafwain (Victor Espinoza riding), Bull Market (Mike Smith), Icecoldbeeratreds (David Flores Flores, town, Guatemala

), Chief Planner (Corey Nakatani) or Friendly Mike (Pat Valenzuela).

The would-be spoilers of the Baffert party are Richard Mandella-trained Gentlemen's Club, Mike Mitchell-trained Total Advantage and William Currin-trained Outta Here.

Coincidentally, Mandella and Gentlemen's Club's sire were the stars the last time a trainer entered a basketball team in a Southern California thoroughbred race. Mandella had five of the six horses in the 1997 Hollywood Gold Cup The Hollywood Gold Cup is a Grade I stakes race for thoroughbred horses inaugurated in 1938 at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California. It was run as a handicap race until 1997 when it was switched to weight-for-age conditions.  and joked that if he lost he would tunnel his way out of Hollywood Park in shame. Gentlemen won to lead the barn's 1-2-3 sweep and Mandella put away the shovel.

Because the Baffert horses have different owners, they'll race as individual wagering interests. Best Pal Stakes The Best Pal Stakes is an American thoroughbred horse race held annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. The race is open to horses, age two, that are willing to race six and one-half furlongs on the dirt. A Grade II event, it carries a purse of $150,000.  winner Kafwain is the 5-2 favorite and second-time starter Bull Market 3-1 on Jeff Tufts' morning line.

Baffert, about to win his sixth successive Del Mar training title, dominates the track's 2-year-old racing in particular, winning the Futurity with Silver Charm (who went on to win the 1997 Kentucky Derby), Souvenir Copy, Worldly Manner, Forest Camp, Flame Thrower and Officer.

Assistants will have to saddle the five horses today because Baffert isn't expected at Del Mar for closing day. He's in Lexington, Ky., for a Keeneland yearling yearling

Racing shifts to Fairplex Park in Pomona for the 17-day Los Angeles County Fair The Los Angeles County Fair (also called simply the L.A.
