John Kiely (1927-2004) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Dungarvan and with the Waterford senior inter-county team in the 1940s and 1950s.

"We are carving out a bit of a reputation as spoilers when it comes to stopping teams getting promotion," said the Waterford boss.

"We became the first Waterford team to beat northern opposition on northern soil when we went to Casement in the last round of the league and stopped Antrim going up.

"Two years ago we went to Breffni Park Breffni Park known for sponsorship reasons as the Kingspan Breffni Park is a Gaelic Athletic Association stadium in Cavan, Ireland. It is the home of the Cavan Gaelic football team. The ground has an overall capacity of about 32,000 with a 6,000 seated capacity.  and denied Cavan promotion and last year we did the same thing to Wexford.

"It would be nice to go to Ennis and spoil Clare's party on Sunday.

"I'm confident we can do well because our away record this year is much better than at home."

Clare, under new manager Frank Doherty, will be desperate to gain revenge for their defeat in the same fixture last year in Dungarvan.

That was a low-scoring affair, Waterford winning 1-6 to 0-7, but they are without the goalscorer from that occasion Ger Power Ger Power (born 27 June, 1952) is a former Irish sportsperson who played Gaelic football with Austin Stack's and Kerry in the 1970s and 1980s. Early life

Nevertheless, Kiely believes he has a stronger squad 12 months on with three newcomers in attack including dual star Liam Lawlor, Patrick Hurney and Connie Power who scored 1-9 when the teams met in Division Four a few months ago.

"We won that game by six points but I wouldn't read too much into it," warns Kiely, "Clare were missing a lot of regulars".

"But I'm happy that I have a better squad than last year and we are a strong, physical team as well.

"Pat Roe (Offaly manager) said we were one of the strongest teams they had played all year."

Keily knows Clare will be fired - up after what described as "a terrible game" last year.

The Banner had won the previous four Championship meetings up to last year and will be anxious normal order is restored and set-up a semifinal clash with Kerry.

But with another dual star Gary Hurney likely to be an influential figure in midfield, Kiely thinks Waterford can repeat the feat.

"This is 12 months on and we have five different players who weren't starting last year. We're fairly confident we can get a good result."

Verdict: WATERFORD
