DEGREES OF CONCERN.
UNIVERSITY vice-chancellors are unwilling to address problems with
degree standards, MPs have warned.
A Commons select committee said it was "unacceptable"
that the higher education sector receive pounds 15billion of public

, but are unable to answer "straightforward" questions
about the worth of degrees at different universities. The cross-party
group of MPs found that the proportion of graduates awarded a first
class degree rose from 7.7 per cent in 1996/97 to 13.3 per cent in
2007/08.
And they concluded that it appears "different levels of
effort" are needed in different universities in order to obtain
similar degrees.
