DEFTONES SAY IT LOUD SURE THEY'LL TALK, BUT THEY'D RATHER PLAY.

Byline: Sandra Barrera Music Writer

The Deftones have built up their fan base from years of relentless touring - not music videos.

``In fact, I hate videos,'' says Chi Cheng ''

 anyway.''

When it's pointed out to Cheng that the video for his band's blistering ``Minerva'' was recently spotted on MTV's ``Headbangers' Ball,'' he kids, ``Well, sure, you must have a speed habit, because they only play it in the middle of the day.

``No ... I'm not loathing,'' Cheng says to himself as he gets back to talk of the road.

The band has relied on the old-fashioned technique of spreading its music since the original incarnation came together in the late '80s. By the time the Deftones released the 1995 full-length debut ``Adrenaline,'' it was go, go, go.

It's still very much the case for the hard-working band - despite millions in record sales. At the moment, it's in the middle of promoting its eponymous fourth release that Rolling Stone rolling stone

Cheng, getting to that place wasn't an easy accomplishment.

``Everyone was being meticulous with their own parts and probably overly critical and analytical to the point of being handicapped,'' he says. ``But, you know, we're all really happy with the way it turned out.''

The band had just come off tour in support of ``White Pony'' when the new songs began pouring out in tormenting screams, loud guitars and battering percussion.

Combining that intense emotion with melody is what makes the Deftones stand out from their peers - at some of whom the band lobbed insults during Metallica's ``Summer Sanitarium Tour The Summer Sanitarium Tour was in Summer of the year 2000 that was then Metallica's first tour in a few years and took place in stadiums. The tour was one of the top grossing tours of the Summer of 2000 and was that as it was the final tour for long-time bassist Jason Newsted who .''

He is the lead singer and back-up guitarist in Deftones and Team Sleep. Moreno was born in Sacramento, California to a Mexican father and a Mexican/Irish/Native American/Chinese mother; , who made barbed comments about tour mates Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and even Metallica.

Moreno expressed his views about certain bands' albums not sounding as good as they used to, and about not being a fan of others. His words weren't taken lightly.

``You know, it's like the 'if you ain't got nothing nice to say' thing, 'then don't say anything at all,' '' adds Cheng. ``He knows better. But in his defense ... everything he said was said as a fan of music. He was giving his honest opinion, and I guess people just aren't used to that sort of thing.''

Speaking of honest opinions: If Cheng hates music videos so much, why was his band promoting one for the song ``Bloody Cape''?

``I was glad to see it get out, because it's a good song,'' Cheng says, adding, ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if the video was any good.''

The video was shot on a very low budget and includes only some performance footage.

It mostly features cameos of the guys, which, Cheng explains, probably will be appreciated only by fans.

``It's really personal,'' Cheng says, returning to his original sentiment about videos being ``pretty ... silly. We'd rather go out and promote our music through playing our music as opposed to radio or MTV. If they want to get on board, great.

``But it's a total gift to be able to go out and play our ... music for people and have them enjoy it,'' he says, adding, ``That should never be taken for granted Adj. 1. taken for granted - evident without proof or argument; "an axiomatic truth"; "we hold these truths to be self-evident"
