Before Saturday, only 15 of his 118 at-bats had come against lefty pitchers. Ethier can probably count on getting a few more. Entering Saturday, a Dodgers starter had reached the sixth inning in just six of the previous 12 games. Given his past two efforts, Aaron Sele didn't figure to improve that statistic, but Sele came through. Sele's season has been a study of contrasts. He was recalled from Triple-A in early May and started the season with a 3-0 record, giving the Dodgers six consecutive quality starts. The next two starts didn't go so well. Sele lasted just four innings both times and allowed a combined 10 runs (six earned) on 13 hits, walked eight and didn't record a single strikeout. Sele was simply part of a trend. In the previous 12 games, the Dodgers went 4-8, and their starters had provided just 66 1/3 innings compared to 44 1/3 innings for the bullpen, a stretch that includes Derek Lowe's complete game Thursday and the 17-inning game in Oakland lastweek. Sele found his May form Saturday, although the Pirates, the team with the worst record in the National League, didn't figure to provide overwhelming resistance. Sele didn't dominate the Pirates, but effectively pitched his way out of sporadic trouble. In the fourth, the Pirates put runners on first and third, but Sele induced an inning-ending groundout by Jose Castillo. The Dodgers' lineup, which included rookies Matt Kemp, Ethier and Russell Martin in the sixth, seventh and eighth spots, respectively, broke through against Duke in the second. Olmedo Saenz, who had six hits in seven previous at-bats against Duke, led off with a sharp single to center and moved to third when Kemp followed with a double to the wall in left-center field. Ethier put the Dodgers up 2-0 with a single up the middle to score Saenz and Kemp. Ethier was tagged out in a rundown after he slipped rounding first base. Duke was chased from the game in the sixth. With one out, Saenz singled to left and moved to third when Kemp crushed a double into the left-field corner. Ethier followed with a sharp single to score both runners. He moved to second on the throw to the plate, then scored on Martin's single for a 5-0 lead. rich.hammond@dailynews.com (818) 713-3611 CAPTION(S): 3 photos, box Photo: (1) Rookie Andre Ethier slides into home in the sixth inning to score the Dodgers' fifth run against Pittsburgh.
