LB, Valencia, Sr.

Michael Herrick and the offense at Valencia drew most of the attention, but it was the improvement on defense that took the Vikings to uncharted territory

At the center of that improvement was Defilippo, who led the area with 24 sacks and made 151 tackles. He was the leader of the area's best linebacker trio, which also featured Gary Cox and Torrey O'Brien.

Starting for the first time only because of an injury, Ciccolini had no interceptions through five games. Then he went on a tear, finishing one short of the area record with 11. He picked off five passes in four playoff games to help Crespi win the Div. X title.

KEVIN THOMAS Marvin Kevin Thomas (born July 28, 1978 in Phoenix, Arizona) is an American football cornerback in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills who was a standout football player at Rio Mesa High School in Oxnard, California, and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A senior who had yet to experience winning, Thomas led a previously average Rio Mesa of Oxnard team to a 10-0 regular season and the Div. IV quarterfinals. Ranked the 75th-best player in the nation by Rivals.com and 65th by Scout.com, Thomas orally committed to USC. In addition to his defense, he led the Spartans in receiving.

CHAUNCEY FAGAN

LB, Notre Dame, Sr.

Although the line and Cary Harris get most of the credit for the Knights' strong defense, it was Fagan who led Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks with 96 tackles. An adept blitzer, he also tied for second on the team with 11 sacks. Although he mostly played the run or blitzed blitzed

DARYL FIELDS

LB, Crespi, Sr.

Fields broke the school record with 311 career tackles after making 147 this season. He also forced three fumbles, blocked two kicks and returned an interception for a touchdown. Crespi of Encino coach Troy Thomas calls Fields the most dominating player he's coached.

DANIEL VILLASENOR

LB, Rio Mesa, Sr.

Rio Mesa of Oxnard was one of the area' surprise teams, and it started with defense. Villasenor helped the Spartans hold opponents to 12.3 points per game, leading them with 15 sacks and 127 tackles. He also served as a battering ram battering ram

JOSH CORDRAY

The leader of the area's best defensive line, Cordray made 19 sacks for 111 yards in losses. Cordray, who earned Daily News first-team honors in 2003, has 33 sacks the past two years. He added 82 tackles for a Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks team that held high-powered No. 2 Valencia to three points.

LOGAN PAULSEN

DL, Chaminade, Sr.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Paulsen led Chaminade of West Hills with nine sacks despite playing in the Mission League, where there isn't much passing. He also led the team with 496 yards receiving as a tight end. Paulsen accepted a scholarship to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
