DEFENSIVE CLINIC IT'S NOT CLOSE AS MOORPARK SHUTS DOWN AGOURA MOORPARK 35, AGOURA 7.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

MOORPARK - Moorpark's defense was all it was advertised. And then some.

The Musketeers were supposed to be tested against Agoura's prolific passing attack. It was no contest.

Moorpark held Agoura to just one touchdown - on a trick play A trick play, also known as a gadget play, is a play in American football that uses deception and unorthodox strategies to fool the opposing team. ``This is unbelievable,'' said Moorpark running back Cliff Cardwell, who ran for 286 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. ``It's probably the greatest feeling I've ever had in my life.''

Moorpark needed just one run from Cardwell in the second half to secure the win. Cardwell broke free from a couple of tackles and raced down the right sideline sideline

He also scored on a 19-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Agoura (5-3 overall) needed the win to keep its Marmonte League title hopes alive, but it can make the playoffs with two wins.

Agoura's only score came on a fumblerooski. Other than that, the Chargers struggled as they had just 238 yards of offense.

Moorpark took an early 14-0 lead on the strength of its balanced offense. Chris Blum caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Eddie Garcia on Moorpark's second possession. On the first play of the second quarter, Garcia ran it in for a score from 1 yard out for a 14-0 lead.

Moorpark's stifling defense has allowed just 7.1 points per game. And linebacker Wes Prior made sure its defense turned in another customary performance.

Prior had three sacks and forced a fumble late in the fourth quarter. ``We're pretty good, but we're going to get better,'' Prior said.

J. R. Jeffrey had an interception off Agoura quarterback Dustin Croick in the first half and Cory Swenson intercepted a pass at the 2 on fourth down in the second half.

Blum scored two touchdowns. He also had a 21-yard run for a 21-7 halftime lead and made several key block's for Cardwell.

Garcia completed 9 of 15 passes for 139 yards and one touchdown.

Ryan Deirmendjian picked up the ball and easily ran 15 yards untouched for a score to cut the lead to 21-7. The trick play was set up by two penalties. But the offense, overall, could never get going.
