DEFENSE SECRETARY DICK CHENEY TO ADDRESS
 IIAA'S ANNUAL NATIONAL LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE
Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney will address nearly 700 members of the Independent Insurance Agents of America (IIAA) during their annual National Legislative Conference in Washington next month.
Cheney will speak during a breakfast appearance at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24. IIAA's 16th annual National Legislative Conference is scheduled for March 24 and 25 at the Capital Hilton, 16th and K streets N.W., Washington. In addition to several prominent speakers from Congress and a legislative "issues" briefing, the IIAA conference will feature more than 1,000 agent visits with their elected representatives on Capitol Hill.
Cheney served in numerous federal positions in the Nixon and Ford White Houses. His service culminated in 1975 when he was named White House Chief of Staff; a position he held throughout the Ford Administration.
He returned to his native Wyoming in 1977 and was elected as that state's sole congressman to the House of Representatives. He was re-elected to this post five times.
Viewed as a rising star after only one term in Congress, Cheney was selected by his Republican peers to serve as the House Republican Policy Committee chairman, becoming one of a few members ever elected to a leadership position so quickly. He was elected chairman of the House Republican Conference in 1987 and then, in December 1988, was unanimously elected House minority whip.
President Bush nominated Cheney to be the secretary of defense in March 1989. He was easily confirmed by the Senate shortly thereafter. As secretary of defense, Cheney directed two of this nation's largest military campaigns in recent history -- in Panama in 1989, and in the Persian Gulf War in 1990-91. In light of rapid changes in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, Cheney is now responsible for downsizing the U.S. military and reshaping its global role.
IIAA is the nation's largest independent insurance agent association representing a network of over 220,000 agents and their employees nationwide. Its members offer all lines of insurance -- property, casualty, life and health.
