DEFENSE SAVES HART OFFENSE'S STRUGGLES CONTINUE IN VICTORY OVER BIRMINGHAM HART 23, BIRMINGHAM 13.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Hart of Newhall football used to be the most exciting in the area, each game a display of aerial fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.

Hart lit up scoreboards and piled on yards with sophisticated play calling, keeping fans in packed stadiums on the edge of their seats.

There were only a few hundred people scattered around College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. Maybe Hart's fan base was confused by the rare Saturday start time. Or maybe people realized the only excitement coming out of Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Whatever the reason, they didn't miss much.

For the second time this season, the Hart defense carried a lackluster offense to victory.

``It was not a good performance by the team today,'' Hart coach Mike Herrington said. ``We couldn't do anything right. I'm worried about the offense.''

, was knocked cold on a hit by Malik Jackson. Lyon lost consciousness for a moment and spent the rest of the game in the locker room.

Alex Pettee was told before the game to be ready to go if Lyon's shoulder bothered him. But the hero of last week's victory over Westlake could only get Hart 10 points in the first 2 1/2 quarters.

With a 10-7 lead in the second half, it looked like Hart (3-1) would be content to run out the clock and rely on its defense as it had in a 7-6 victory over Moorpark to open the season.

Then junior receiver Taylor Embree brought the Hart offense to life by taking a pass from Pettee, shaking a defender near the sideline sideline

and reached the end zone for a 37-yard play.

Hart needed the score, too, because Birmingham rallied to score on a 47-yard touchdown pass from James Beloff to Craig Posey A posey can be a flower bouquet. Hart put the game away when Robbie Casselberry broke three tackles on a 56-yard run that set up Delano Howell's 13-yard touchdown run up the middle.

Hart's defense made four interceptions, two by Anthony Luna, and became the first team this year to stop Birmingham sophomore running back Milton Knox. Knox, who had an injured in·jure

``The defense played really well,'' said Pettee, who was 12 of 20 for 111 yards. ``The defense did their jobs, and we have to start doing ours. We should have played a lot better.''

Hart totaled 279 yards, what used to be a good half for a team that has won Southern Section titles in five of the past seven years and eight in Herrington's 16 years as coach.

Even starting 11 sophomores, Birmingham (1-3) thought like it was in the game.

``We could have won,'' Birmingham coach Ed Croson told his team. ``They're not a better team than us.''
