DEFENSE LEADS CRESPI IN WIN CELTS WIN WITH GOAL-LINE STAND CRESPI 15, CHAMINADE 7.

Byline: ERIK BOAL Special to the Daily News

Crespi High of Encino's defense had come to the rescue of a struggling offensive unit on numerous occasions Friday.

So, it came as no surprise that with the game on the line, the host Celts CELTS - Boston Celtics (basketball club)

Chaminade of West Hills took advantage of a costly Crespi fumble with 1:09 remaining to march down to the Celts' 10-yard line. But Crespi pressured Chaminade junior quarterback Ryan Griffin into throwing one pass out of the end zone and the Celts knocked down two other attempts, including one at the goal line on the game's final play, to hold on to a 15-7 nonleague football victory.

``I take my hat off to our defense. Those guys played their butts off,'' said Crespi coach Jeremiah Ross, whose team sacked Griffin three times, in addition to recording a fumble recovery (Al Guerrero) and an interception (Spencer Chapman).

Crespi (3-3), ranked sixth by the Daily News, was looking to run out the clock after taking over on downs with two minutes remaining. But a fumbled exchange from center on a third-down play near midfield gave No. 8 Chaminade (4-2) one last opportunity.

Griffin, who completed 22 of 45 attempts for 251 yards and a 10-yard touchdown on a shovel pass to Devin Smith, needed only three completions to move the Eagles into the red zone (networking) red zone - An environment located between internal and external firewalls where software and hardware are deployed to enable access to extranet applications.

But like they had all game, D.J. Holt and Joseph Fauria applied the pass rush, Guerrero, Michael Moll and Karim Williams delivered the hits and Mark Watley came up with a timely deflection in the secondary to allow Crespi to escape with a victory in front of a standing-room-only homecoming crowd. The nail-biting triumph came one week after the Celts suffered a heartbreaking 38-35 defeat on the game's final play against Canyon of Canyon Country.

Chaminade, which recorded a 14-10 victory over the Celts in the team's last meeting in 2001, was able to contain Crespi's rushing attack for the majority of the contest. But Austin Shanks (20 carries, 151 yards) broke free on a 65-yard touchdown run with 10 minutes left to give the Celts some breathing room.
