Those hearts kept the Chargers (14-9) scoreless for just over five minutes of the fourth quarter as the Tornadoes charged from 56-52 deficit to a 66-56 lead.

"I think that when it came down to it, we were rushing too much, trying to come back too quick. And we had a lot of turnovers throwing away passes."

On offense, Hoover beat up the Chargers inside in the fourth quarter, working the ball inside to Russell Russell, English noble family. It first appeared prominently in the reign of Henry VIII when

"No. 50 (Russell) just took apart our big guys offensively," Laibow said. "He was off a little bit in the third quarter, but he came back big in the fourth."

Indeed, Russell had 12 points in the final quarter.

Russell gave credit to guards Arbi Baghdasarian (20 points) and Martin Avanessian for getting him the ball.

"They were driving and I was just following for the rebounds," Russell said. "And they did a good job of dishing it off."

Hoover seemed a little sluggish in the early going and trailed 34-32 at the half.

"I think we were a little nervous," said head coach Kirt Kohlmeier, whose Tornadoes advance to the second round for the first time since 1983. "The other team had been to the playoffs the last three years in a row, but we haven't had that experience for a while."

The Tornadoes trailed by three at the beginning of the fourth quarter before outscoring Agoura 29-15 the rest of the way.

Also scoring in double figures for Hoover was Hull with 13. Josh JOSH Joshua

The victory was another triumph in a season that has seen the Tornadoes win their first Pacific League title since 1984.

The winners advance to the I-AA second round where they will meet Esperanza, which beat Eisenhower 74-47 on Friday.

Esperanza is the tournament's second-seeded team, but has been handicapped by the loss of star player Josh Greer to a broken leg.
