``The funding for Edwards and China Lake that was approved by the House today demonstrates the central role that both bases continue to play in the defense of our country,'' McKeon said. ``At a time when the nation faces multiple threats around the globe, these bases afford our men and women in uniform the key facilities and assets they need to meet the challenge.''

Among the projects at Edwards funded by the bill are a $3 million flight data management system to improve the processing and storing of flight test data; $4 million for continued upgrades to computer modeling tools for advanced power and propulsion technologies; $3.5 million for computer modeling tools for satellite propulsion and engine integration; $3 million for advance liquid rocket booster A Liquid Rocket Booster (LRB) is similar to a solid rocket booster (SRB) attached to the side of a rocket to give it extra lift at takeoff. ``These resources for critical research and development projects ensure that our military installations remain at the forefront of developing new advanced technologies to protect our nation,'' Thomas said.

Air Force Plant 42 and neighboring Lockheed Martin Plant 10 will also see continuing funding for a number of ongoing aircraft programs, including $4.2 billion for the development and production of the F-35 joint strike fighter, $2.9 billion for production of the F-22A fighter, and $16 million for a project to equip the B-2 stealth bomber to handle small-diameter bombs.

Northrop Grumman assembles portions of the F-35 and conducts the B-2 modification work while Lockheed Martin manufactures parts for the F-35 and the F-22A.

The Senate is working on its own version of defense funding legislation. Once the Senate approves a bill, negotiators from the two houses will meet to reconcile the two bills.
