DEEPER THAN SKIN FOUNDATION HELPS YOUNG BURN SURVIVORS REBUILD LIVES.Byline: Rick Coca Valley News Writer At the Children's Burn Foundation in Van Nuys, the work is as much about reconstructing children's lives as reconstructing their skin. Founded in 1985 by burn specialist Dr. Richard Grossman Richard Grossman is the former co-director of the Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy (POCLAD). He is co-author of Taking Care of Business: Citizenship and the Charter of Incorporation. He lectures widely on issues of corporate power, law and democracy. and the late actor McLean Stevenson McLean Stevenson (November 14, 1927 – February 15, 1996) (full name Edgar McLean Stevenson, Jr.), born in Normal, Illinois, was an American actor most recognized for his role as Lt. In an appearance-obsessed society, Friedman said building the self- esteem of survivors is imperative. She told the story of a teenage girl who came to summer camp but was not very engaged in the program. Embarrassed by her skin, she refused to swim. To Friedman's surprise, the girl returned the following year. ``People here understand,'' Friedman said the girl told her. ``My friends say they do, my parents say they do, but they don't.'' The foundation also teaches fire prevention to thousands of school children in the Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena areas. The Fire Safety House, a mobile house complete with a bedroom and kitchen, is used in the education. Children learn what to do when a fire occurs, such as crawling under smoke to seek safety. Children are more likely to retain what they learn in the hands-on experience available through the mobile house than if the lesson were taught only in a classroom environment, Friedman said. The foundation also offers a scald-prevention program to adults and teens who care for small children. ``Anywhere from 50 (percent) to 70 percent of children who are severely burned and admitted for in-patient care are 4 and under,'' Friedman said.
