FIVE types of deep sea fish Deep sea fish is a term for fish that live below the photic zone of the ocean. Examples include the lanternfish, flashlight fish, cookiecutter shark, bristlemouths, and anglerfish.  face extinction, a new study shows.

Scientists found the number of roundnose grenadier, onion-eyed grenadier, blue hake, spiny eel, and spinytail skate has slumped 98 per cent in 17 years.

They fear that in three generations the species will be wiped out from the North West Atlantic.

The grenadiers have been fished for food. But all five are being caught accidentally by trawlers fishing for halibut halibut: see flatfish.

They are also hit harder because they have few offspring and grow slowly.

The scientists from Memorial University, Newfoundland, said: "Urgent action is needed to save the species."

The findings are in the journal Nature.
