``Mainly it's to get people to start checking identification,'' said Sgt. Richard Larue, noting that offenders can lose their liquor license and be fined if convicted.

Between 6 p.m. and midnight Friday, deputies sent two 18-year-old women into the stores to attempt to purchase the alcohol without proper identification, according to a Sheriff's Department spokesperson.

Police departments often send decoys into businesses after receiving tips from the public that alcohol is being sold illegally, he said.

However, deputies from the Sheriff's Department conducted Friday's raid on 14 area businesses as part of its ongoing program Eliminating Alcohol Sales to Youths, which performs the sting on many businesses at once.
