The school, which lost its coaches after winning the state championship and taking second place in the national finals in 2000, introduced its new academic decathlon adviser on Thursday.

``I was a little nervous,'' said Debbi Mjoen, 45, a newly hired English teacher who just earned her credential while teaching at Chatsworth High School. ``I felt it was really important for a campus of our size to have a program like this.''

The 2002 national finals will be held in April in Phoenix, Ariz.

``Debbi Mjoen will do a wonderful job,'' said Assistant Principal Steve Pietrolungo, who recruited her as he interviewed teacher candidates in the spring. ``She will bring a lot of energy to the school. The kids are excited, and the parents are excited that we are starting the program.''

While Mjoen plans to ask other teachers for help in subjects out of her area of expertise, U.S. history teacher and former longtime coach Sally Hibbitts offered some advice.

``The big thing is to try to accomplish as much as you can on campus, because leaving campus isn't conducive to studying for the decathlon,'' said Hibbitts, who with her husband, Ken, an economics and government teacher, gave up weekends and holidays to lead the Simi Valley academic team to the nationals in 2000. Equally significant, she said, is ``to persevere per·se·vere
