said early Sunday that they were ``deeply shocked and distressed by this terrible news'' of the death of Princess Diana, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said.

Princes William, 15, and Harry, 12, were informed of their mother's death by their father, the Prince of Wales, at Balmoral Castle, Scotland, where members of the royal family traditionally spend their summer holidays.

Confirmation of 36-year-old Diana's fatal injury in a Paris car crash with her close friend Dodi Fayed reached Britain a few minutes before 5 a.m. local time, while most of the country was sleeping.

The news of Diana's death was passed to the royal family by the French ambassador in Britain, who telephoned the queen's private secretary at Balmoral.

,'' Prime Minister Tony Blair said in a statement. ``The whole of our country, all of us, will be in a state of shock and mourning.''

``Diana was a wonderful, warm and compassionate person who people - not just in Britain, but throughout the world - loved and will be mourned as a friend.

``Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, particularly her two sons, and with all the families bereaved in this quite appalling tragedy,'' Blair said.

Dodi's father, Harrod's owner Mohamed Al Fayed, said the deaths were ``appalling and quite needless.''

``The world has lost a princess who is simply irreplaceable.''

Britain's Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, who was on a tour of Asian countries, said in Manila: ``I am greatly shocked by this news. Our first thoughts must be with her children and family at this time of immense loss to them.''

, summed up what was for many an initial reaction of the death of the princess a year after her divorce.

``It is a sad end to somebody who has in many ways had a sad life,'' he said.

Vacationing in Martha's Vineyard, Mass., President Clinton said he and his wife, Hillary, were ``profoundly saddened by the event.''

``Hillary and I knew Princess Diana and we were very fond of her,'' Clinton said in a statement issued by Deputy White House press secretary Joe Lockhart.

Clinton said his thoughts and those of his wife were with Diana's family, friends ``and especially her children.''
