Salvador Gonzalez, 24, was found by family members shortly after 6:40 a.m. in a one-room unit within a house in the 24300 block of Race Street in East Newhall.

``He was discovered by family members stabbed to death,'' said Lt. Tom Martin, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department This article is about the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department, not to be confused with the smaller Los Angeles County Police

``There are different avenues that we are exploring,'' Martin said. ``It's too early in the investigation. There's nothing to give us a clear direction.''

Neighbors said Gonzalez had been involved in a street fight days earlier about a block from his home.

``He liked to fight,'' said Anna Hernandez, who often went out with Gonzalez and other friends. ``He would get into arguments about anything.''

Investigators said they found no evidence Gonzalez was a gang member.

``We found no hard evidence to indicate he belongs to any of the street gangs,'' Martin said. ``There's nothing in the records that say he is a gang member.

Friends said that Gonzalez worked in construction and had lived in Newhall with his two brothers and a sister. He recently moved to Race Street with his mother, when she arrived from Mexico.

``He was a good man,'' said Gelacio Hernandez, a neighbor. ``He was nice.''
