Today Mr Robinson was cleared of causing the death of the 46-year-old by dangerous driving. A jury also found him not guilty of careless driving. The court had heard how Mr Robinson, of Winchester Drive, Wall- asey, had driven his four-and-a half- tonne fire service Mercedes Sprinter through south Liverpool from his St Anne Street base on January 18. The firefighter wept as he recalled the incident while giving evidence to the court. Mr Robinson told how he had seen Mr Kelly's Mercedes at the traffic lights and slowed from 45mph to 25mph as he approached the junction with Dock Road. He said: "I glanced up to check the direction of travel and it happened in a split second. "It was like a child stepping in front of a bus." Mr Kelly's passenger David Williams, 62, said he was "disgusted" with the verdict. Speaking outside court, he said: "It has been very traumatic, my injuries are not important, but a friend has lost his life and he has got a widow. "I knew Derek for 30 years. There are not many men in this day and age like him, honest and hardworking.
