DEAL MEANS KIDS CAN PLAY BALL.

Byline: Orith Goldberg Staff Writer

VALENCIA - With just a week to spare before today's opening day celebration, the William S. Hart PONY Baseball and Softball PONY Baseball and Softball is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people grow into healthier and happier adults, primarily through the organization of baseball and softball leagues.  League obtained an increased insurance policy that will allow thousands of kids to ``play ball.''

League President Dan Schlender said Hart obtained $5 million in coverage, a five-fold increase in the policy held last summer when a flash fire at the complex left three volunteers with critical burns.

The Newhall Land and Farming Company The Newhall Land and Farming Company is a land management company based in Valencia, California, United States. The company is responsible for the master community planning of Valencia, as well as the management of farm land elsewhere in the state. , which provides property in Valencia for the popular 10-field youth complex, had demanded the increase after being named in a lawsuit brought by one of the victims.

The new deal was closed last week with Gagliardi Insurance Services of Campbell in the Bay Area, Schlender said.

``It's one more thorn out of our side,'' Schlender said.

Today's opening ceremonies start at 11 a.m. and include addresses by league officials and local dignitaries. ``It should be an exciting day - barring rain,'' Schlender said. The last spring season ended abruptly July 18 when leaking propane in the complex's barbecue area ignited a flash fire as several post-season tournament games were being played.

At least five people were burned, the most serious injuries suffered by Gloria ``Dee'' Grant, Allie Haynes and Kurtis Anaya, who were working the concession at the time.

A lawsuit was filed Dec. 1 on behalf of Haynes, alleging negligence, premises liability, product liability and negligent infliction of emotional distress The tort of negligent infliction of emotional distress (NIED) is a controversial legal theory and is not accepted in many United States jurisdictions. The underlying concept is that one has a legal duty to use reasonable care to avoid causing emotional distress to another  against the league and Newhall Land.
