POKER poker, card game, believed to have originated in Asia and first played in the United States in the 19th cent. A traditional cutthroat gambling game at first, it is now also an internationally popular social pastime.  pro Marty Smith Marty Smith (born November 26, 1956 in San Diego, California), is a former professional motocross racer. He won three AMA National Motocross championships, all aboard Hondas, and was runner-up twice.  on his exit from the Aussie Millions tournament

I WAS playing 57k when I was dealt Ten Ten for the second time in the tournament.

A loose aggressive player opened with a standard raise to 2,500 in first position (blinds were 400-800 with a 100 ante). I was a couple of seats after him and decided just to call.

The flop FLOP - 1. An early system on the IBM 701.

[Listed in CACM 2(5):16 (May 1959)].
came Jack of hearts Ten of hearts, 7 of spades, and the initial raiser bet 5k. I know this is a bit risky as there are a lot of bad cards that could have come but I had position on the raiser and I wanted to gamble to try to win a really big pot.

The turn was another Jack and my opponent checked. I bet 8k and he thought for a moment and raised me to 20.

There was pretty much no doubt in my mind that I was winning at this point and I was just thinking about how to get his last 20k.

I was pretty undecided as to whether he had a Jack or whether he was bluffing, but I reasoned calling was the best move for me. There weren't were·n't

Contraction of were not.

weren't were not
many cards I didn't want to see on the river, but one of them arrived - in fact the worst one of all.

The board now read 7, Ten, Jack, Jack, Jack, meaning that I was now losing if he had Ace Ace, King King, Queen Queen, or a Jack, and only splitting the pot if he had the other Ten.

He moved all in for his last 22k or so, and obviously I didn't really like things much now.

I thought that it was more than likely I was losing, but I couldn't be totally sure that he wasn't continuing with a bluff.

There was 80k in the middle and I was having to call a 22k bet. I made the call.

When I saw his hand I actually felt a little bit better. If I had re-raised him a decent amount preflop then I would have won the pot, but after it got to the flop then I think the money was always going to go in.

He had raised with Jack Ten and I was already drawing dead on the turn. I don't think I played this hand terribly well but it was still a very unlucky spot for me to find myself in and I'm not going to beat myself up about it too much.

That left me with 7k and while I did make a brief recovery - doubling up with Ace King v Queen King - there was to be no Poker Million-style fairytale ending.

Shortly into level two I raised all in for 11k from the button with Ace Queen, got called by Ace 9 and he rivered a 9.
