are in a dead heat to become America's best-selling car. The Camry had a 6,200-car lead entering December, but the automakers and analysts say the contest is too close to call.

``It's going to be a nail-biter,'' said Toyota spokesman Brett Voris.

It is the county seat of Union County.GR6 The population was 15,942 at the 2000 census, and the Census Bureau estimated 17,621 in 2006. . Dick Colliver, Honda's executive vice president, has challenged Accord sellers to have a strong month.

``The dealers are very aware of where we stand,'' said Honda spokesman Andy Boyd.

``It's going to be neck and neck,'' said analyst Chris Cedergren of Nextrend. But he said both cars are winners since they dominate their midsize car market and have been big hits with consumers.

It wasn't supposed to be a tight race. The Camry had a 40,000-car lead on the Accord through August. In September, Honda officials introduced the redesigned Accord and said it could be the best-selling car in 1998, but didn't talk about 1997. The redesigned Accord, however, promptly picked up momentum on the Camry, which had gone on sale as a redesigned model in 1996.

Meanwhile, the Camry ran into production shortages, causing a 22 percent sales drop in November. Part of the problem is that Toyota makes the new Sienna sienna: see ocher.  minivan and the Camry at the same plant in Georgetown, Ky., thus limiting Camry production.

The victory ``might boil down to who has the inventory,'' Barker said. ``Those two cars are in such hot demand right now that it's hard to satisfy the demand for both of them.''

Honda did have a larger inventory when supplies were last counted, but both companies are very much in the race.

``If we get it, we'll be happy,'' said Honda's Boyd. ``It's a great feather in our cap.''

``Our goal wasn't to get it,'' said Toyota's Voris, ``but it sure would be nice to get it.''
