Dr Eugene O'Connell told how he feared the patient had a collapsed lung and referred him to Tallaght Hospital where he was prescribed an antibiotic, and discharged. The following morning Mr Keeler - the youngest of nine siblings - complained of feeling worse. Dr O'Connell added: "He looked quite ill. I was quite concerned and called an ambulance to transport him to St James's." Stephen's brother Paul said he looked like a corpse in St James's A&E unit and couldn't believe he was being discharged. Specialist Linus Offiah, who treated Mr Keeler within minutes of arriving at St James's told the inquest he believed the patient was well. The doctor rejected an allegation he spoke to Stephen's brother and late mother, who begged her son be kept in hospital. At around 4am the next day Mr Keeler's condition deteriorated and his girlfriend called an ambulance which took him to the Mater. He waited for a bed in the intensive care unit before being transferred to St James's at around 5pm. He died in its intensive therapy unit shortly after 10pm. The inquest continues. |
