DE LA HOYA CUT BY HIS CUT-MAN.

Byline: Robert Morales Staff Writer

Taking the term ``cut-man'' to new limits, Joe Chavez inadvertently cut the left hand of Oscar De La Hoya Oscar de la Hoya (IPA pronunciation: [ˈɑs.kɛɹ dɛ.lɑ.ˈhɔɪ.jɑ][1]) (born February 4, 1973) — nicknamed the Golden Boy  with scissors scissors

There was no announcement to the media that the injury had occurred. The Las Vegas Review-Journal The Las Vegas Review-Journal is published in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is the largest circulating daily newspaper in Nevada, and one of two daily newspapers in Las Vegas (the Greenspun Media Group-owned Las Vegas Sun is distributed with it).  ran a small story in Saturday's edition.

Richard Schaefer, De La Hoya's adviser and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Golden Boy Promtions, confirmed the injury Saturday morning.

There apparently was no serious talk of postponing Saturday's middleweight championship fight between De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled. , said Schaefer, and De La Hoya fought with 11 small stitches in the v-shaped cut on the palm near the third and fourth fingers.

De La Hoya was given a shot of Lidocaine lidocaine /li·do·caine/ (li´do-kan) an anesthetic with sedative, analgesic, and cardiac depressant properties, applied topically in the form of the base or hydrochloride salt as a local anesthetic; also used in the latter form as a  the day of the injury to numb the cut area so the stitches could be taken. Lidocaine is a substance banned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. But Marc Ratner, CEO of the commission, said there is no violation as long as De La Hoya informed the commission when he took it and why.

Ratner said a pre-fight urinalysis was done on De La Hoya, and one was to be done post-fight as well. He said Lidocaine, which is topical, goes through the system in 24-48 hours, meaning there should have been none left in De La Hoya's system at fight time.

Ratner was asked what would happen if tests were to show De La Hoya had taken a more recent shot.

``Then a commission action would be taken,'' Ratner said. ``I don't like to deal in `what if.'''

Chavez, well-known as one of boxing's top hand-wrappers, is also De La Hoya's cut-man.

``When it happened around 8:30 Wednesday night ... I was told he got cut by the cut-man,'' said Schaefer, who immediately asked De La Hoya if he wanted to postpone the fight.

``He was (upset),'' Schaefer said. ``I went there immediately. He was very calm. Not once did he say, `Well, you know, I can't fight.' But I told him, `It's not worth it to go through with something if you are really not 100 percent.''

He said, ``I'm going through with it. I'm in the best shape of my life. I will overcome it as well.''
